Watching Daniel Bloom

When 3 days is actually 5…

Posted on: April 6, 2011

Well, when we came to hospital we were told we’d be here from 1 to 3 days, depending on what turned up on the EEG.  In other words, in some ways, a longer stay was actually a better thing (because it would mean they were still looking for seizure activity). With that in mind, I planned for the longest possible stay and made sure Charlotte was taken care of and that work knew that I would be missing all three days.

On our first day here, one of the child life specialists spent some time with us and casually said, “Oh, you’ll probably be here 5 days – most people end up here 5 days”. I dismissed it, but apparently she was right. Today we learned that we’re here until Friday – two more days that I hadn’t planned for. Fortunately, as I’ve mentioned before, I have an amazing workplace that is very, very understanding about these things. I also have the best sister on the planet who is taking care of my daughter and keeping her so busy that I don’t think she’ll ever want to come home :).

Still, it’s hard to sit here knowing that a) Daniel and I both have another 2 days of confinement in this little room and b) I have to sleep on the “bench” for another 2 nights and c) I have another 2 days in this very strange environment that amps up my already-existing paranoia.
